Kolkata: A unit of Dr BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences (DBCRPGIPS) is all set to get a brand new Covid unit on its second campus adjacent to Beliaghata ID Hospital. The space at the hospital’s polio clinic was lying almost unused for years. Now this revamped unit will have 110 beds of which 80 will be for Covid care. This was part of state government’s preparation to tackle the potential third wave.
“The Covid unit on this second campus will have 40 PICU beds and 40 HDU beds while the 30 beds will continue to cater to orthopaedic services.
This will be in addition to the 40 bedded Covid facility — 20 PICU and 20 NICU — on the main hospital campus,” said DBCRPGIPS principal Dilip Pal.
The unit of BC Roy, the state’s referral hospital for children, was part of the plan chalked out in September to add close to 500 PICU beds to the existing facility. The brand new unit at Phoolbagan is expected to be inaugurated soon.
A health official said that the finance department had cleared Rs 88.3 lakh for procurement of drugs and other essentials for setting up the unit with 80 new PICU beds and 30 general beds and out of it, Rs 49.6 lakh had been earmarked for Covid management drugs.
“We have 30 Covid beds, combination of PICU and HDU beds. If the need arises and health officials want we can increase the capacity,” said paediatrics professor Mihir Sakar of Medical College Hospital Kolkata.
“We are ready with 40 bedded Covid PICU. There are regular meetings where health officials are taking stock of the third wave preparation,” said Chittaranjan Seva Sadan (CSS) principal Ashish Mukhopadhyay
Salboni Superspeciality Hospital had been allocated Rs 17.5 lakh for upgrading CCUs for the pandemic. For upgrading the CCUs for Covid patients at Maharaja Jitendra Narayan Medical College hospital at Cooch Behar Rs 34.8 lakh will be spent.
